Xylitol is a sweetener that can be used in a variety of foods and products, including sweets and chewing gum. But how much xylitol should you consume, and how can you incorporate it into your daily routine?
There are two key factors to consider when using xylitol: how much to consume and how to spread your intake throughout the day.
We then look at how much it costs to make xylitol part of your daily routine.
How much and when to consume
We recommend consuming at least 5 g of xylitol per day, which is roughly 6 Minttu sweets. We also recommend spreading your intake over several doses throughout the day rather than consuming it all at once.
For example:
Have 1–2 Minttu after each meal.
Have another 1–2 after a drink or snack, or simply whenever you feel like having one.
This makes it easy to spread your xylitol intake throughout the day while enjoying Minttu as part of your routine.
In any case, we recommend waiting 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else.
You can consume more if you wish, but bear in mind that excessive consumption of xylitol can have a laxative effect. As a general guideline, we recommend no more than around 30 Minttu sweets per day.
A simple way to remember it is:
1–2 Minttu after meals or coffee, spread throughout the day.
How much does it cost?
If you want to make xylitol part of your daily routine, here’s a breakdown of how long our packs last and what that works out to per day.
Our large 78 g pack lasts around 15 days and costs €0.47 a day, based on consuming 6 sweets a day.
Our small 30 g pack lasts around 6 days and costs €0.58 a day, based on consuming 6 sweets a day.
So, choosing the larger pack means a lower daily cost.
For around €14 a month, you can make xylitol part of your everyday routine.
Using xylitol as part of a healthy routine
Xylitol can be a convenient addition to your daily routine, but it shouldn’t be considered a replacement for good oral hygiene or a balanced lifestyle.
Diet and lifestyle
Your overall diet is an important part of looking after your teeth. It’s a good idea to limit your intake of foods and drinks high in added sugars and to avoid frequent snacking throughout the day.
Water is a simple choice between meals and can also help maintain a healthy oral environment. Limiting acidic and sugary drinks is another useful habit.
Basic oral care
Good oral hygiene remains the foundation of everyday dental care.
Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth regularly to remove plaque and food debris that a toothbrush may not reach.
Regular dental check-ups are also an important part of looking after your teeth and gums.
Xylitol doesn’t replace these habits. It simply gives you another way to incorporate a sugar-free sweetener into your daily routine.
