Xylitol Has Fewer Calories Than Sugar

You may be wondering how many calories xylitol contains, especially compared with good old table sugar (sucrose).

The good news is that xylitol contains only about 60% of the calories found in table sugar. To put it into perspective, 100 g of xylitol contains around 240 calories, compared with 400 calories in the same amount of sucrose.

But that’s not all. Xylitol also has a much lower glycemic index (7–13) than table sugar (65). This means that consuming xylitol has a much smaller impact on blood glucose levels. In practical terms, replacing sucrose with xylitol may help avoid the negative effects associated with high blood glucose levels, including excess fat accumulation, obesity and diabetes.

This is just one of the reasons why xylitol can be a useful alternative to sugar, alongside its potential benefits for oral health.
